The Western Sydney LHD Youth Council is shortlisted to receive a 2019 WSLHD Quality Award for its contribution in co-designing healthcare services in Westmead.
The inspiring group has gone beyond engaging young people from the community and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Members have sought to embed the consumer voice in all aspects of service planning for the new Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) ambulatory care centre as part of Westmead Redevelopment’s refurbishment program.
Westmead Redevelopment project co-ordinator Natasia Seo said the council members had worked hard to ensure quality through collaboration (3D concepts of the AYA shown above).
“The Youth Council has put a lot of effort into the design and planning of this space,” Natasia said.
“The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Hospital, builders, architects and the project team have all joined to design this space, and deliver what the youth expect from it.
“To have this work recognised by the community would be a wonderful achievement and proof of what outcomes can be created by banding together.”
Natasia said the AYA project held a special place for her personally.
“When I first started working on this project, I was the same age as many of the Youth Council members we’ve involved,” she said.
“I really want them to succeed and be put in the spotlight.”
Included in the Youth Council’s impressive portfolio is:
Schematic and detailed design, reviewing and writing Models of Care (MoCs), arts planning with the Westmead Redevelopment.
Developing and informing policy about transition care from paediatric to adult services.
Collaborating in strategic opportunities with Australian youth representatives of the United Nations.
Advocate on planning, development, integration and implementation of policy development and programs for young people.
