According to Kavita Devaharan from Multiplex, there is something about working as an engineer on a hospital project that ticks all the boxes.
“We have the opportunity to appreciate first-hand exactly what is needed and to deliver it."
“Knowing patients will be able to walk around and benefit from the new shared hospital building here at Westmead exemplifies why a career in hospital engineering is so worthwhile,” she said.
Kavita started out in engineering working for Multiplex in Adelaide, and the role has taken her from coast to coast working on some of the biggest health infrastructure projects in the country.
Currently working on the Westmead Redevelopment project, she is a senior services engineer for Multiplex and has had the opportunity to be involved in the project from tender through to construction.
“It’s been great to see the project move from concept design to delivery. Our new building will serve the community for many years to come, and with the entire Westmead health and education precinct continually expanding, it’s exciting to be a part of it.
"Working onsite is both challenging and rewarding. I love that I get to look out the window and see the building going up in front of me.”
While Kavita loves working on site, it’s the close proximity to Westmead Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead that really appeals to her.
On any given day her role can take her through the halls of both hospitals and it’s here where she has the opportunity to see the people her work will directly impact.
“You can’t help but be affected by what goes on inside those walls. You approach things from a different perspective. We have the opportunity to appreciate first-hand exactly what is needed and the chance to deliver it.”
Earlier in the year Kavita, along with other members of the Westmead Redevelopment team, visited The Children’s Hospital School where she was involved with the engineering and construction curriculum being taught to the students.
“I would encourage anyone to consider a role working in hospital engineering and facilities management. It is just so impactful, going into the space and seeing the people your work will benefit.”
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is currently recruiting for a Chief Engineer. Ready to throw your hard hat in the ring?
