The award-winning Westmead lean storeroom program has been thanked for donating equipment and suppliers to overseas health facilities.
Items donated have included surplus hospital and birthing beds, trolleys, surgical instruments and resuscitation masks.
Western Sydney Local Health District innovation and redesign co-ordinator Hayley Manyu said in addition to the overseas donations, some items from Westmead Hospital had been relocated to other sites across the district. Items were sent to a veterinary clinic while some expired consumables were sent to simulation labs for student training.
“We received a touching thankyou letter recently from MedEarth, who have transported our donations to medical facilities in Papua New Guinea, Burundi, South Sudan, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Hayley said.
Westmead Redevelopment change and transition lead for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Michelle Lincoln said the program’s team were thrilled to receive a Western Sydney Local Health District Quality Award recently for their efforts.
“This is one of many examples of the partnership work happening at Westmead, so it was great to be recognised,” she said.
“Many storerooms across Westmead are now much tidier, ordering processes have been refined, we are reusing or recycling, and now, overseas communities are benefitting too.”
To-date, 43 storerooms have been transformed across 18 services at Westmead Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, resulting in more than $122,000 worth of stock being reallocated or disposed, and $230,000 in productivity savings annually.
The storeroom program is part of the overarching change program happening at Westmead, facilitated by the Westmead Redevelopment project, and is part of a stream of work related to clinical storage.
The next round starts in November 2018 and participants will be announced soon. Read more about the Westmead Redevelopment project’s storeroom program.
