PUGs are coming to Westmead

Planning new hospital facilities involves hundreds of staff meeting regularly in Project User Groups (PUGs).

Every unit has a group which includes doctors, nurses, allied health staff, support staff and planners, who meet regularly to develop a brief for the unit - a brief which is provided to the architects to design that facility.

Every unit is purpose-built for the type of care that is being delivered in that unit, so the user groups are critically important.

Project user groups currently include:

  • Emergency department
  • Intensive care unit
  • Operating theatres
  • Cardiac
  • Respiratory
  • Gastroenterology
  • Aged care
  • Surgical inpatients
  • Medical imaging
  • Pharmacy
  • Sterilising Services
  • Transit Lounge
  • Main entry.
Project user groups involve about 200 hospital staff in 14 different groups. Those representatives return to their unit to consult with their colleagues, so potentially thousands of staff members will have their say in the design of our new facilities.Caleb Teh, planner
