Activity-based working: creating a healthy and sustainable workplace for dentistry staff

Professional and academic dentistry staff enjoy their new ABW environment.

The University of Sydney School of Dentistry’s academic leadership and professional staff recently moved into their newly refurbished home at 1 Mons Road, Westmead.

The school has introduced an activity-based working (ABW) philosophy to the space, which brings together professional staff and academic leadership in a flexible working environment.

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) has adopted ABW to create welcoming workplaces that enhance an integrated way of working, connecting healthcare to the community. The ABW philosophy supports Sydney Dental School’s vision of creating a welcoming, contemporary workplace environment that fosters collaboration.

“This is an exciting moment for our staff, and a significant step for the University of Sydney”, said Professor Heiko Spallek, Acting Head of School and Dean, Sydney Dental School.

“Adopting an activity-based work space will help us be more flexible and also remove barriers
to communication and interaction between staff."

“The expanded space also allows us to finally have the majority of the management of the Sydney Dental School co-located on a single campus here at Westmead.”

The new office has been designed with a variety of flexible work spaces, to naturally facilitate staff collaboration, improve communication, increase efficiency and improve overall workplace culture.

An efficient technology solution has also been rolled-out to ensure staff can easily transition between different types of spaces and are able to work effectively.

Activity-based working is an important principle in the planned development of both the Westmead precinct and of the University of Sydney broadly. Sydney Dental School’s early adoption provides an important opportunity for other parts of the university, as well as our partners at Westmead, to observe and learn from the introduction of these practices.
